Technical aspects in walkways and driveways de-icing
Technically, de-icing can be achieved by applying defrosting – heat through installing electric heating cables. Other techniques involve mechanical methods (scraping, pushing) or by using liquid substances that lower the freezing rate of water – salts, alcohols, glycols etc.
The de-icing of the driveways (car parks, alleys, pavements, stairs, exterior stairs, running tracks, loading platforms and bridges) can be done by installing electrical cables. They are installed under the asphalt or concrete, invisible and efficient. In the case of roof and gutter de-icing, electric heating cables are used and the temperature can be set manually or automatically from a thermostat. Sidewalk and step de-icing are recommended to completely avoid the risk of injury during winter.
Cables are fixed with clamps to the roof or gutters, as well as to places where there is a risk of ice or snow to form. Electrical cables and heaters are also recommended when installing de-icing systems for driveways and ramps to avoid vehicle skidding. In general, all these systems, regardless of the platform on which they are installed, determine the safety of the premises and the people. For the roof, the required installed power is 250 W/m². To prevent ice formation, heating cables must be installed at the bottom of the roof. The installation of roof heating cables is usually supported by the installation of a snow-slip prevention system.
